Women's Leadership Summit in the Dominican Republic

In just a few hours, fifteen girls and six chaperones will be taking off to the Dominican Republic for an eighth day Women’s Leadership Summit. SOS and Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas have teamed up to challenge and explore themselves on a carribean destination service opportunity. With nerves rising in the U.S. concerning the nine American deaths in this popular tourist destination, we have been receiving a lot of attention from parents and media wondering how we will stay safe on the island. We have many safety precautions in place including strictly drinking bottled water (instead of tap water), drinking only sealed and American branded products, banning the use of ice and alcohol for all the participants, avoiding purchasing food or beverages from street vendors and only consuming food from ACIS (the travel company we are partnered with) approved restaurants. We will remain in groups of 3 or more and always accompanied by a chaperone for the entirety of the trip as well. With all these measures in place, as a traveler, I feel very safe and excited for the trip! We are travelling to a third world country to explore the D.R. and ourselves as young women and leaders. We will be visiting many nonprofits and organizations that work to improve the lives of Dominicans living in vulnerable communities. The fight against violence, drugs and sexually transmitted diseases is strong on the island and we are eager to help their brave missions. With a very elaborate itinerary set for each day we are on the beautiful island, I will be taking notes and writing daily posts about the experience of the group. I hope to see growth in myself and my fellow travellers as women and leaders by the end of the trip. The leaders of tomorrow are ready to go on a fantastic journey to the Domican Republic!
